The nerve that may be keeping you down...

"Brainy What-Why-How"

Your weekly nibble of brain-based tips to help you move and feel great!

🧠

What:

Mobilising the axillary nerve, like I demonstrate in this short video, may help your shoulder mobility, particularly in reaching your arms overhead (and thus, helping you get "up" and not kept "down" 😉 )

Why:

This nerve innervates muscles that help you reach your arm overhead (aka shoulder flexion)

Sometimes nerves become unable to do their job optimally of transporting information between your brain and muscles. When this happens, you can experience pain or numbness, but also loss of mobility.

By moving the joints that the nerve passes through in a certain way, we can help the nerve (I think of it like brushing tangles out of my hair, so then each strand of hair can flow freely from my head  💁🏻‍♀️ )

How:

When working with nerves, more is NOT better. Thus it's a good rule to move only to about 3 out of 10 sensation, and mobilise the nerve for just 10 seconds or so. Once or twice a day is plenty!

And always test your shoulder range of motion before and then after, to know if it worked for you or not!

P.S. I decided it was time to FINALLY get serious about YouTube. Instagram has been problematic for me for years (and I know I'm not alone here) and while YouTube isn't perfect, I'm officially taking a stab and being serious there. It's not great, but it's a start: check out my first new video: "Unlocking Mobility: The Neurology Behind Stretching"
